Yvonne Wells (b. 1939) is a native Alabamian who explores history through the art of quilting. Her vibrant works celebrate historic figures and topics, many of which reference her upbringing in the American South. Wells also cites the significance of her Christian faith and embellishes each piece with her trademark triangle motif representing the Holy Trinity: the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
Loaned from the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts, The Great American Pastime: The Neegro Baseball League (2009) is one of three quilts Wells made to commemorate the history of the professional league organized in the 1920s by Black and Latin American communities. Wells continues to create quilts, sharing stories about her life and topics close to her heart.
