Alexander Calder: Collaborative Creations

Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art

March 23–June 24, 2023

The underlying spirit of partnership in Alexander Calder’s artistic practices enriches his influence on modern art and design.

Throughout his career, Calder created innovative sculptures, toys, and wearable adornments using wood, metal, and wire. By the 1960s, his whimsical and abstract designs were translated into textiles by various artisans, including his wife, Louisa Calder, who was an accomplished fiber artist. Their textiles reveal regional and global sources of inspiration, a blending of modern spirit with handcrafted forms and imagery from distant cultures.
